COS 430 SPRING 2009 HW #5 DUE TUESDAY 2/17/09 In general, for the "Activities", be sure to provide enough information about what you saw to convince us that you actually did it. For example, if an activity says that you look at a title page, you should write down the title that you saw there. If the activity says that there is something humorous on a page, you should tell us what was humorous about it. Alternatively, you can provide images from your sessions if that is easier for you. Thus, you can include a screen shot or printout from a webpage, etc. Remember, the key idea is that you convince us that you did the activity. The system homework should be on CDs and the rest of the homework should be on paper as usual. STRUCTURED HOMEWORK 1. Do multiple-choice questions 1-20 on pp. 105-107 of EH. 2. Do Activities 5-1 through 5-4 in Chapter 5 of EH. FREE-FORM HOMEWORK 1. Read Chapter 10 & 11 of PS and write at least 500 words describing what you think are the 3 most significant points made in each chapter. SYSTEM HOMEWORK Write and submit your weekly report following the guidelines in Lecture 5. You should omit any parts of the report dealing with attacks since you are still in the process of setting up the server. You should focus on explaining what you have accomplished so far, what distribution and VERSION of the OS you are running, the current state of the services that you are running, and any problems of special interest that you ran into so far.You should discuss what you saw from your server being connected to the Internet. Document attacks that were made against your server and discuss whether the attacks were successful or not. When we get to the Cyberwars you will lose points if your services stay down -- not running services is not an acceptable defensive strategy in this class. Be sure to create the HTML document that I discussed in class. BE SURE TO SUBMIT YOUR SYSTEM HOMEWORK ON 2 CDs. 1. The CDs need to be in a sleeve or a jewel case -- stapled together containers made of paper will be returned unexamined and ungraded. You would not submit something like this in a professional situation, so you should not submit it here. Late penalties will apply to resubmissions. 2. The CDs should be labeled with the following: a. Your name. b. The number of the homework to which they belong c. The due date which applies to them d. One copy should be labeled GM and the other LW You will lose points for incomplete or unreadable labels.
